Avoid “jaw-jut”!

featuredImages

The position change your body probably makes most frequently is a shift from sitting back against the chair to leaning forward to bring you closer to your work, props or conversation partner. This shift should be made from the crown of the head (head floating upward; back and neck lengthening; shoulders and back wide). The best way to make this position shift is to pivot from the hip-joint while your head floats forward and upward. You should feel as though you grow taller as you tilt forward, rather than slouching and shrinking forward.

All graceful and healthy movements are initiated from the crown of the head, not the chin. Beware of the nasty alternative: “jaw-jut”. Your eye monitors will catch it in the mirror: as you attempt to position your body forward, your chin pushes up and out, your neck curves forward and your head strains backward: if you stay in this jaw-dictated posture, you may end up with a big pain in your neck! Many people use jaw-jut subconsciously when they are in a confidential pose for conversation. The jaw and chest are thrust forward, the back and neck are bent tensely and the voice-box is pulled high in the neck by the jaw: OUCH!

READY NOW?: Rest back against your vertical chair support, pull your chair closer to your listener if you wish, release your head-ball upward off your neck-post, let your back and neck lengthen. When you need to bring your face closer: float your helium head balloon forward and upward; use the hip-joint to pivot; allow your spine to lengthen gently and naturally.
